Grok Ani alternativesGrok Ani is gone. The best animated AI companions that talk back

Anime companion fading from one phone while another lights up

For a little over a year, Grok's Companions were the most talked-about animated AI characters around. Ani, the gothic anime companion, could talk to you out loud, react with her face and lip-sync every word. Then, in September 2026, she was gone.

If you came here because the Companions tab disappeared from your Grok app, this guide covers what happened, what you can still keep, and where to find an AI companion that still looks at you, reacts and talks back.

What happened

What happened to Grok Ani?

The short version: xAI called the Companions feature an experiment and shut down the animated part.

Grok launched its anime-style Companions on July 14, 2025, for SuperGrok subscribers (TechNews). On July 24, 2026, an official Grok statement described the 3D avatar feature as an experiment and said it would be retired soon, so the company could focus on core Grok (RoboRhythms).

At the end of August, an in-app notice named September 1, 2026 as the removal date. Within about a week, the Companions tab had disappeared for nearly everyone (AI Insights News).

In other words, the character survived but her face didn't. For many people, the face was the whole point.

Why it ended

Why did xAI shut down the animated companions?

Animated companions are expensive to run. Real-time 3D rendering plus low-latency voice uses a lot of computing power, and the Companions earned very little in return (RoboRhythms).

The numbers tell the story. When the Companions launched, app-analytics data reported by TechCrunch showed daily Grok downloads jumping 40%, while revenue rose only 9% (RoboRhythms, citing TechCrunch and Appfigures). They brought people in, but they didn't pay for themselves.

This is the most important lesson for anyone choosing their next companion: an animated companion is only as safe as the business behind it. When a big AI lab adds a character as a side feature, that character can be cut the moment its computing power is worth more elsewhere.

So when you shop for a replacement, look for two things:

  1. 01

The companion is the product, not a marketing experiment attached to something else.

  2. 02

The animation is efficient, so it doesn't need costly hardware to keep running.

Where Ani went

Where did Ani go? The Animates app explained

The studio that built Grok's avatars, Animation Inc, released its own companion app called Animates, and Ani showed up there around August 29, 2026 (AI Insights News).

Before you jump in, know the catch: nothing transfers. Your Grok chat history, memories and affection level do not move to Animates (AI Insights News). You start from zero with a familiar face.

Early user reviews, which are reports rather than test results, mention tight free talk time, memory lapses after about a month, and no way to edit a companion's personality (AI Insights News). Animates is free to download, with paid tiers listed on the US App Store at $7.99, $19.99 and $39.99 a month (RoboRhythms).

What to look for

What to look for in a Grok Ani alternative

Most "Grok Ani alternatives" lists recommend text-first apps with image generation. That's fine if you mainly miss Ani's personality. But if you miss seeing her react, you need a companion that is actually animated. Check these five things:

Five icons: animated face, real-time voice, chat modes, personality editing, privacy
  1. 01

    A real animated face.

Expressions and lip-sync that react while the character talks, not a still image.

  2. 02

    Real-time voice.

Replies should start fast, before the pause gets awkward.

  3. 03

    Flexible chat modes.

Sometimes you can't talk out loud. Look for text chat as well as voice.

  4. 04

    Your own personality settings.

You should be able to rebuild Ani's personality (or create a new one) in your own words.

  5. 05

    A clear exit.

Read the privacy policy, and keep your own copy of your character's personality so you never lose it again.

Our take on each

ZeroWeight AI is the closest match if what you miss is a character who looks at you and reacts while she talks. You can type, type and hear her answer out loud, or have a full real-time voice conversation. In every mode, the character shows matching facial expressions, emotions and lip-sync, and you can trigger actions like waving, laughing or dancing.

What sets ZeroWeight apart is the engine. Instead of a heavy 3D runtime, or off-the-shelf formats like Live2D or VRM, ZeroWeight built its own lightweight animation engine, so characters render fast and run smoothly right in the browser. That kind of heavy rendering cost is exactly what made Grok's companions hard to keep alive. You can design a character, give it a personality and start talking in three steps, or pick one from the community marketplace.

Animates makes sense if you specifically want Ani's look back. Go in knowing it's a new app with a fresh account, and that you can't bring your Grok relationship with you.

Replika is the most established option, with a customizable 3D avatar and voice calls on paid tiers. Its style is more realistic than anime.

Razer Project AVA puts an animated character on your desk as a hologram. It's not available yet, and it currently runs on xAI's Grok engine (80 Level), the same company that just retired its companions.

Grok's text persona keeps Ani's personality and your history, but without a face. It's a good stopgap while you decide.

How to bring Ani's personality to a new companion

You can't export a Grok companion, but you can rebuild her personality in about 15 minutes. Do steps 1–2 soon, while your Grok history is still there.

  1. 01

Open a normal Grok chat on the account that holds your companion history.

  2. 02

Ask for a written profile. Try: "Summarize our past conversations as a character profile. Include your personality, speaking style, nicknames, running jokes, key shared memories, and how our relationship developed."

  3. 03

Edit the profile yourself. AI summaries can miss or invent details, so fix anything that's wrong and add the moments that matter to you.

  4. 04

Remove sensitive details before pasting it into any new app.

  5. 05

Rebuild the character. On ZeroWeight: Design her look, Assign Personality by pasting your edited profile, then Talk & Interact.

  6. 06

Keep the profile in a file you own. Next time any platform changes direction, you'll be moving a document instead of losing a character.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Grok Ani gone for good?+

The 3D animated version is gone from the Grok app. Her personality still exists as text in normal Grok chat.

When were Grok companions discontinued?+

Removal began on September 1, 2026, rolling out account by account, and was complete for most users within about a week.

Why were Grok companions removed?+

xAI called the feature an experiment. Reports point to the high computing cost of real-time 3D animation and voice compared with the small revenue it earned.

Can I move my Ani history to another app?+

No app imports it directly, including Animates. You can ask Grok to summarize your history as a character profile and use that to rebuild her elsewhere.

Is there a free Grok Ani alternative with an animated face?+

Yes. ZeroWeight AI is free to start and gives you an animated character with live expressions and lip-sync. Animates and Replika also have free entry points.

Can I use an animated companion without talking out loud?+

Yes. ZeroWeight supports text-only chat, and a mixed mode where you type and the character answers out loud.

The bottom line

Grok's Companions proved that people love AI characters who can look at them, react and talk back. They also proved how fragile those characters are when they're a side experiment inside a bigger product.

If you miss Ani's personality, Grok's text chat still has her. If you miss the experience, a face that reacts and a voice that answers, choose a companion built for exactly that, and keep a copy of your character's personality so it's always yours.
